10月13日 Navarathri, Golu and the dollsSeptember in South India (atleast in Tamil Nadu) is the time to get the dolls out - Navarathri is here and so is the Golu.
Free sundal, new clothes, laughter, colors, fresh flowers for the deity, streets lit up, visitors pouring in, gossip, sweets, chaos, unpacking boxes containing dolls, setting up the miniature cricket ground/park..it just never ends.
This time I visited my aunt's house and she had a spectacular display of dolls of all shapes and sizes depicting stories told long ago and forgotten. News is that a television crew visited her home to shoot a video of the Golu!
My old post on the Golu (I am not going to link to it since it is now a post sans pictures - what is a post on Navarathri Golu without pictures!) is often dug out by a lot of people hunting for information on this festival, so why not another post this year? :)
Here are some pictures of the Golu at my aunt's home.
Seven steps Depicting a scene from the Ramayana - you can spot the ten headed Ravana and Hanuman, the monkey God sitting on a chair made by coiling his tail
The Dancing Doll - my all time favorite. The doll is made out of three separate parts - the head which is attached to the neck by a hook, the torso which is in turn attached to the leg by another hook. This loose assembly makes the doll capable of swaying to mild breeze and hence the name :) A few more snaps are in my photo album that is visible to the right of this page. In Hyderabad, I didn't come across people setting up Golu, though I did see a lot of Dandiya sessions being organized. My own apartment's association organized one too, complete with a DJ playing "Rock n Roll Soniye.." among other songs :) 评论 (5)
